Message from the President
This is a cool time of year, and I’m not just talking about the change in temperatures. It’s a cool time to be a CPA in the Coastal Bend.

First, we’re coming off a month of great publicity with the Counting on Santa program having newsworthy success. It feels good to be a part of an organization and profession that believes in giving back. Be sure to check out the pictures below. And read about the next opportunity to give back by participating in the silent auction to fund more local scholarships.
Next, we’re stepping into a new year with new CPE on deck. We have a chapter luncheon with member votes next week, our 58th Annual Tax Conference at the beginning of February, and CPE planned for every month for January through May.
So be sure you’re taking advantage of all of the cool things happening in our chapter in 2016. We’ll see you at a chapter event soon!

CPE Luncheon and Member Votes on Jan. 8
Prior to our January CPE presentation, we’ll be holding two member votes. The first vote will be to approve the proposed slate of Officers and Directors for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. Nominees to be presented for election at the Jan. 8 chapter luncheon are:
Officer Candidates: President – Misty Mata; President-Elect – Jennifer Perales; Vice President – Brett Morrison; Secretary/Treasurer – Kim Green
Chapter Director Candidates: Chapter Director (2016-17) – Natalie Klostermann; Chapter Director (2016-17) – Craig Schkade; Chapter Director (2016-18) – Louis Tatum; State Director (2016-2019) – David Morales
Nominating Committee: Kellie Shipley – Public; Kendra Kennison - Non-Public
Current Term of Office: Immediate Past-President – Jeff Smith; State Director (2015-2018) – Susie Sullivan; TSCPA Executive Board (Treasurer-elect) – Jerry Spence
The second vote will be on a proposed chapter dues increase of $10 for CPA members who do not hold retired license status with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. If approved, the new dues rate would be $65 for these members, and it would go into effect in 2016-2017.
Trey Gerhardt, JD, from Padgett Stratemann & Co. LLP will discuss types of fringe benefits, the need for an accountable plan, exclusions from taxation, and the proper tax treatment, valuation, withholding and reporting requirements of employers.
Save on 2016 Tax Conference –
Updates on federal tax developments, professional issues, becoming the firm of the future, estate planning and Texas state tax issues are on the agenda for the 58th Annual Tax Conference on Feb 5. Register by January 22 for the member rate of only $139. Registrations after January 22 and at the door will pay $169 for members.

Prepare to Bid at the Silent Auction
The third annual silent auction will be held on Feb. 5, at the 58th Annual Tax Conference. Help show support for local talent by helping to offset their educational costs. The last two auctions raised more than $4,000 that went directly to local scholarship awards. There are two ways you can participate in the 2016 silent auction. First, if you have something to be included in the auction, please contact Chapter Liaison Melinda Bentley at firstname.lastname@example.org or 800/428-0272, ext. 279. Second, be prepared to bid on some great items at the Tax Conference. We’ll be at the Education Service Center all day. If you’re not able to come out for the CPE, please consider stopping by and making a bid.
Counting on Santa Breaks
Your generosity is overwhelming! The fourth annual Counting on Santa collection effort, led by Past-President and Chief Elf Natalie Klostermann, yielded almost $9,000 in monetary contributions and three times the number of toys collected in the prior year. Linda McKamie, Executive Director for Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi said, “At one point I was concerned that there would not be enough toys and gifts to fill all of the requests, but those fears are now completely gone ... thanks to you all!”
