TSCPA TIP SHEET

Texas Margin Tax Calculator
The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts has released a tax calculation tool that allows users to compute the tax due under the new Texas franchise or margin tax. Read the fine print or you might not complete the form correctly. For example, the big print says you can deduct wages as determined by W-2 forms, but the fine print reminds that owner and partner distributions are also deductible.

Federal Key Person Volunteers Needed
Several Texas federal legislators do not have a TSCPA key person – someone to communicate the CPA agenda, advocate the CPA position and help protect the profession. If you know one or more of your federally-elected officials and would like to participate in the AICPA Federal Key Person Program, please contact Patty Tinsley. (E-mail ptinsley@tscpa.net; phone 817-419-0167.)

National Management of an Accounting Practice Survey
The deadline for completing the online National Management of an Accounting Practice Survey is Sept. 1. The PCPS/TSCPA National MAP Survey provides local and regional CPA firms with the most comprehensive information available for comparing management policies and financial results against other firms. Participants will have access to the results, including an online reporting tool for data filtering and customized benchmarking. For more information, contact Dianne Jones Rollin. (E-mail drollin@tscpa.net; phone 800-428-0272, ext. 219, or 972-687-8519.)

Tell a Student About Membership
If you know a business major who is not yet a TSCPA student member, send him or her to the Student Lounge section of the TSCPA Web site (www.tscpa.org). Students who join now will enjoy membership until Aug. 31, 2007, for only $35. Benefits include a $250 coupon for Becker Conviser CPA exam review courses, listing TSCPA membership on their resumes, unrestricted access to TSCPA's Members Only and Student Lounge sections of www.tscpa.org, receiving TSCPA publications, and more.

Four $250 tuition/book reimbursements, provided by the Accounting Education Foundation, will be awarded through a random drawing in October. To be eligible, students must be valid student members (renewed by Sept. 1, 2006), majoring in accounting, who have completed at least nine hours of accounting.

For more information, or to receive an application by mail, contact Melinda Bentley. (E-mail mbentley@tscpa.net; phone 800-428-0272, ext. 279, or 972-687-8579.)
